    BALATONBalaton is Lake Balaton, not a city, but Hungary's largest resort area, about 2 hours' drive South-West of Budapest. It is the largest lake of Central Europe, 77 kilometres long and 4 - 14 km wide. On the sunlit slopes running towards the lake's Northern shore grape and wine production has been going on since centuries.
    Shallow sandy beaches -- especially on the South shore -- and the prohibition of motor boats make it perfect for family vacations. Fishing and yachting are major activities. Here and there, such as in Siofok, nightlife also thrives.     BALATONALMADI.
      A picturesque holiday RESORT on the northern shore of Lake Balaton (see above), surrounded by hills from the west and north which protect the settlement against the prevailing winds and help create a pleasant "mediterranean" climate. Local people have been working with viticulture on the hillsides for centuries and visitors are always received cordially in their wine-cellars.     BALATONFURED.
      A popular RESORT town on Lake Balaton (see above). It is considered the "capital" of the Northern lake shore and it has significant yachting life. It is an ancient settlement which was already inhabited under the Roman Empire. Relics of the past are manifest at every step: Ancient residential districts, old buildings, churches, intimate vineyards, parks and old trees send their message to the people of our present time. It is also a favorite location for coarse fishing, carp being the commonest catch. The

    BALMAZUJVAROS.
     
    Characteristic town of the Eastern "great Plains" (Alfold, Puszta), an Eastern gateway to the Hortobagy National Park, one of Hungary's UNESCO-certified World Heritage sites. Hortobágy is the biggest grassland, over 800 km² , similar to a steppe, remaining in Central Europe. Habitat for 342 bird species. Visitors might see mirages there. Balmazujvaros is the home of the 4-star Hotel Balmaz.

    BUDAPEST  is Hungary's CAPITAL, a metropolis of some 2 million inhabitants, an alluring blend of the old and the new, combining the unique charm of the bygone Austro-Hungarian Monarchy with the sophisticated life of a contemporary cosmopolitan city.     BUK. Situated in Western Hungary, in the flat area along the river Répce, at the foot of the (Austrian) Alps. The town is nearly 1000 years old, recently renowned for thermal water of a unique mineral composition that came to the surface at the end of the 50s during oil drillings. The Bukfurdo RESORT is now a 13-hectar park of 26 pools, and a bathing and wellness complex of hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, restaurants, pubs and shops for those who seek relaxation and cure.     CSEPREG. Village in Western Hungary between Sopron and Szombathely, near the Austrian border. Location of one of Hungary's prime golf courses -- Birdland -- and the 4-star Romantik Hotel Oreg Malom (Old Mill) resort. Close to the Buk thermal bath resort area.

    CSERKESZOLO. Village in Jasz-Nagykun-Szolnok county, in the Northern Great Plain region of central Hungary. Its claim to celebrity is based on 82°C thermal water certified for medicinal application of joint ailments, accidental injuries and gynecological diseases. It has a newly built Water Park and a 4-star hotel.  

    DEBRECEN. Hungary's 2nd largest city, synonimous with wealth and conservatism since the 16th Century. Located on the Great Hungarian Plain -- the "puszta" --  220 km east of Budapest, near the Hortobágy National Park. Its protestant Great Church -- the largest in the country -- symbolizes the city's character as a center of the Reformation as well as of its citzens' liberty-mindedness as it was here that Hungary's independence from Austria was declared by Lajos Kossuth in 1848.     DEMJEN.  Village in the grape-growing, wine-making outskirts of Eger. The four-star Egri Korona Borhaz ("House of Wines" hotel) provides superior accommodations. 

    DOBRONTE.  Small village less then two hours by car from Budapest or Vienna, one hour from Lake Balaton, amidst the picturesque countryside at the foot of the untouched hills and forests of the Bakony. Surrounded by 13th Century castles and splendid palaces and mansions of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. It boasts a luxurious four-star hotel, the Hasik.

    DUNASZENTMIKLOSA very small village near Tata, about half-way between Budapest and the Austrian border on the M1 Motorway. Location of a 5-star holiday village resort.

    EGERSeat of one of Hungary's five bishoprics established in the eleventh Century AD. Its arguably most famous castle of the country in 1552 withstood with its garrison of less than 2,000 defenders an attack by the 40,000-strong army of Turkish Sultan Suleyman I "The Magnificent".     ESZTERGOM.   A city 50 km north-west of the Budapest, on the right bank of the river Danube, which forms the border with Slovakia there. Esztergom was the capital of Hungary from the 10th 'till the mid-13th century. As the seat of the Primate of the Roman Catholic Church in Hungary, its cathedral is the largest church in Hungary, and the Keresztény Múzeum (Christian Museum) has the largest ecclesiastical collection .     GARDONY. Largest town on Lake Velence, 50km South of Budapest on the way to Szekesfehervar.

    GODOLLO. Small town 30 kms east of Budapest.     GYENESDIAS
    Large village on the Northern shore of Lake Balaton, on the outskirts of Keszthely. Near thermal lake Heviz. The Wellness Hotel Katalin provides 4-star lodging.  

    GYOR.  The most important city of northwestern Hungary, halfway between Budapest and Vienna, the sixth largest in Hungary. Seat of one of Hungary's five bishoprics established in the eleventh Century AD. Hungary's second richest town in historic buildings after Budapest, with reconstruction of the Baroque centre of the town underway. Churches, palaces, museums, characteristic corner-balconies and narrow lanes, are all reminders of a historic past. Gateway to the UNESCO-certified World Heritage site of medieval Pannonhalma Abbey.     GYULAA resort-town in South-Eastern Hungary, close to the Rumanian border.     HARKANY.  One of Hungary's best-known and most beautiful SPAs, near Pecs, close to the Southern border with Croatia.     IPOLYTARNOC Village in Northern Hungary, renowned for its major fossil discovery site.     KECSKEMET. The 8th largest city of the country, county seat of Bacs-Kiskun. Characteristic  of the towns of the Eastern Plains, the "alfold". Has one of the nicest town centres of the country, with interesting secessionist buildings.     MATRASZENTIMRE-GALYATETO Center of the Matra mountain resort area, is the third-largest town of Hungary, less than 100km Northwest of Budapest.
